Golf takes extreme concentration, patience, and skill. The goal is clear. One could say pursuing an education could be relatable to golf with those same traits. Mesh the two topics together, and you've found yourself a fitting pair.
Bavarian automaker BMW found a creative way to bring together the love of the game and the desire for higher education by creating the Evans Scholars Foundation, an organization dedicated to providing scholarship opportunities to young golf caddies.
Every year during the BMW Championship, BMW donates a $100,000 four-year scholarship to the foundation based on a pro golfer's ability to achieve a hole-in-one. This year, golfer Hunter Mahan scored a hole-in-one on Conway Farms Golf Club's 17th hole (this is Mahan's second hole-in-one at a PGA Tour after the 2006 Zurich Classic of New Orleans). This promised the scholarship donation as well as a i3 electric vehicle to the lucky recipient.
BMW, along with the Western Golf Association, will determine which high school senior caddy would most benefit from this opportunity.
"Each year BMW's contribution to the Evans Scholars dramatically changes the course of these young lives," says WGA President and CEO John Kaczkowski. "We thank them for this additional commitment to the Evans Scholars Foundation and congratulate Hunter Mahan on today's hole-in-one."1
BMW Championship's raised more than $14 million for the charity since 2007.
