Seeing a new BMW already makes an admirable impression on those who understand the quality and history of the brand. We have innovative minds to thank for that; some of the brightest ideas that reveal themselves at auto shows have blossomed on the production line and are enjoyed by drivers today. That being said, after patiently waiting, we finally got the full details of the BMW i8 after its debut at the Frankfurt Auto Show, a vehicle that will be available for purchase next year.
This showstopper, which runs on eDrive hybrid drivetrain technology, houses a 1.5-liter, turbocharged, three-cylinder engine under its hood and delivers 231-hosepower and 236 lb.-ft. of torque. This power goes straight to the rear wheels via a six-speed automatic, and an electric motor takes care of the front wheels with 131-horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque via a two-speed automatic. Therefore, the total drive system output finishes with 362-horsepower and 420 lb.-ft. of torque.
The i8 deviates a bit from its cousin, the i3, and it has a sharp, aerodynamic, futuristic look. It's also only 3,285 lbs., quite light compared to the competition. That's easily attributed to the aluminum suspension elements and carbon fiber body. This will certainly make for a speedy, seamless drive.
The i8's interior is just as intense and futuristic as the exterior, it comes with a bevy of standard equipment (Nativation system Professional with proactive drive system for all-electric drive, and more), BMW ConnectedDrive features (i.e. Park Distance Control, Intelligent Emergency Call function, etc.), and services for BMW i via the 360° ELECTRIC program.
The i8 price tag starts at $135,700 without destination fees, and we're looking forward to it here at Bert Smith BMW. In the meantime, if you'd like to see the beauty found in each vehicle of our current lineup, please visit us here in Saint Petersburg, FL. We look forward to your visit!
