True BMW enthusiasts know the M5. Since the moniker was originally introduced in 1984, the vehicle has evolved into a dynamic blend of track horse and luxurious business sedan. And, while it might seem like just yesterday when the BMW M5 first launched, the 2012 model year marks the fierce sedan's fifth generation.

Having gained immense wisdom over the past few years, BMW has infused the M5 with benchmark-setting efficiency, comfort, and efficiency-boosting technologies. To satisfy even the biggest speed fiends' cravings, they've also added the most powerful engine ever featured in a BMW series-produced model.

To enable drivers to make the most of the engine's brute force, BMW has mated it with a high-torque 7-speed M-Double Clutch. Together, the V8 and transmission increase max torque by over 30 percent compared to its predecessor, and overall power output by 10 percent. Translated into acceleration time...that's 0-60 mph in just 4.4 seconds!

Or, is it? ...To find out for sure, the good folks at Car and Driver decided to put the new 2012 BMW M5 to the test. They were right to be skeptical. It turns out; BMW is being modest with their 4.4-second, 0-60 mph estimate. Car and Driver clocked 3.7 seconds! That's right...faster than even the A8.

In addition to being tear-up-the-tar fast, the new BMW M5 is also extremely efficient, proving that yes you can be frivolous with speed and mindful of resources. Compared to its predecessor, the new higher-range 2012 M5 uses approximately 30-percent less fuel.
