Luxury brand BMW takes aim at Lexus this year by doubling the number of hybrids it will be offering drivers. The German company will increase its lineup from two vehicles to four with new hybrid variants of the BMW 3 Series and the BMW 5 series. So far, Lexus has had a kind of monopoly on luxury-hybrid vehicles, but with this move, the automaker will be truly challenged for the first time.

The current BMW hybrids, the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 and the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 have been only marginally well-received due to their high price points. BMW has a few strategies to combat this issue, however. The company has issued a call for "Electronauts" on its website to drive the new BMW ActiveE. A "BMW Electronaut" is described as "a BMW ActiveE driver; one of 700 adventurers and explorers. A front runner of innovation, and an advocate for sustainability. A surveyor of the present, and a proponent of the future - the future of mobility." BMW challenges drivers to "become one of the first to drive the all-new, all-electric BMW ActiveE, and join us in the next frontier. Together, we're redefining the way we live and the way we move. It starts with 700 cars, two years, and one collective mission that will reshape history."1  BMW asks its buyers to not only stand out from the crowd with new hybrid technology, but also to positively impact the future by collecting data from a vehicle with a smaller carbon footprint.

Although BMW is one of the many companies to expand its hybrid/ EV lineup (Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz are also building new models), Bert Smith BMW is confident that our vehicles will outshine the competition.
