BMW has opened many doorways to the future of car technology. Now, they're throwing open another. And, it isn't for any 'Green' technology such as stop-start, a regenerative brake system, electric pumps and power steering, or 8-speed ZF transmission. BMW, an efficiency pioneer, is already using all that.

Rather BMW is reportedly working on an all-new intelligent engine control system that uses the vehicle's navigation system to more efficiently regulate pertinent functions which can be improved to further conserve energy (i.e., battery recharging and engine cooling). According to Tom Baloga, VP Engineering, BMWNA the imminent technology suite officially dubbed "predictive engine management" works best during drivers' everyday routine commutes.

"We are really excited about this," says Baloga. "The vehicle will know from the map what kinds of hills and highway stretches you will experience. We are very close to offering this in production."1

Such a technological advancement will be a milestone for the auto industry worldwide, undoubtedly keeping BMW in the forefront of innovation. And BMW really is putting their money where their energy-saving mouth is. Specifically, they're investing approximately $1.5 billion in R&D to develop these new fuel-saving technologies.
