Motor Trend has new information on the upcoming 2012 BMW 3-Series. According to a report the 3-Series will slightly larger than earlier models, and feature an additional 2 inches of length. It will also be a bit wider and there will be more track length along with a longer wheelbase.
With the additional size added, the 3-Series will look similar to the 5-Series, adopting "softer features" from BMW's new design.
The 3-Series will keep its forged-aluminum five-link rear suspension and aluminum-intensive double-joint struts. Since it's going to resemble its 5-Series brother, the car may feature the same adaptive anti-roll chassis.
Changes are also expected under the hood. An entry-level 1.6 liter turbo or a direct-injection turbocharged 2.0 liter powering the classic vehicle. BMW will also furnish a naturally aspirated 3.0 liter 6-cylinder. The 3.0 liter turbocharged "straight-six" will likely be at the top of that range. BMW is expected to fit an 8-speed automatic to the 3-Series.
Inside, instrument clusters will get a matte black background with color graphics for the displays, set up in a new arrangement.
The 2012 3-Series will share the next-generation's 1-Series, which is expected to debut in 2011. BMW's 3-Series is also expected to be introduced next year.
