Not long ago readers of the magazine Off  Road named the BMW X3 "Off-Road Vehicle of the Year 2011". Already, the BMW X3 is claiming yet another success, taking a solid lead in a reader survey conducted by Europe's best-selling specialist journal for four-wheel drive cars, Auto Bild Allrad.

This is the eleventh time, readers of Auto Bild Allrad have been asked to name their favorite four-wheel drive models among those available from German automakers.  With so much success in the past this time around, there were over 130 competitors featured in nine different categories.

The sheer volume of competitors alone makes winning the "Four-Wheel Drive Car of the Year 2011" title an impressive feat for BMW. What makes it even more noteworthy is the fact that it's a repeat win. Its predecessors also scored the majority of reader's votes, back in 2006 and 2007.

As is to be expected, the new X3 is substantially different from its predecessors, which BMW originally used to establish the concept of Sports Activity Vehicles in the luxury segment. It offers not only more generous passenger and cargo space, more efficient engines, and enhanced driving comfort; but also an expanded array of innovative equipment features.

While both the "Four-Wheel Drive Car of the Year" and "Off-Road Vehicle of the Year" designations were awarded to BMW X3 in the European market. The award-winning vehicle is gaining fanfare here in the U.S. as well.

In a recent New York Times review, Lawrence Ulrich raves about the BMW X3's performance, which he says tops that of every other crossover in its class, "If you've got the dough, the X3 is hard to beat as a high-jolt family car. It's manageable for empty nesters, but just big enough for married couples with one or two children. It is unimpeachably fashionable, but within the tasteful spectrum of curbside radar. And being a BMW, it goes like the dickens."1
