BMW is working on plans to produce three new models, one of them will be the 2-Series. The small to mid-size hatchback vehicle will place it in between their upcoming small 1-Series cars and existing 3-Series.

According to reports, a future 2-Series would become "BMW's entry-level rear-wheel drive model while the 1-Series, along with the minicar and the small hatch models slated below it, would be FWDs."

According to American Car and Driver, these new rumored cars include a minicar based on the BMW 'Megacity' concept, a front wheel drive BMW 1-Series and a new 2-Series.

From what World Car Fans says about a 2-Series and 1-Series rumors: The news that BMW plans to switch the 1-Series to a front-wheel drive platform in 2015 may explain why BMW has been so cryptic about just how many models or body styles would be derived from its new front-wheel drive platform. The front-drive 1-Series may also benefit from the new FWD hybrid system BMW is developing with PSA Group.

BMW recently filed for a trademark application in the United States for new nameplates: 228, 230, and 235, hinting at 6-cylinder power plants for that new 2-Series. BMW's badging does not always corresponds to what's under the hood. Expect 4-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines in any possible future 2-Series as well.
